Adaptation is more than 'easier or rest'
Your signals can reshape today's workout in many ways, adjusting the warm-up, capping intensity, swapping the workout type, or adding a breathing block to the cooldown. The coach picks what fits.

When to pick Xert
Xert is built around its own physiological model rather than FTP alone. Your fitness signature (threshold power, high-intensity energy and peak power) updates whenever you ride harder than the model thought possible, so you rarely need a formal test. Its Forecast planner lets you name the power numbers you want on a date and tells you honestly if the target is out of reach, and its SMART and Magic Buckets workouts adjust to how much you have left as you ride.
It's a strong pick if you're a cyclist who enjoys the model itself, trains mostly on a smart trainer or with a power meter, and is happy to invest some time learning a vocabulary of its own (strain types, focus, training status). The price is fair for how much modelling you get.
When to pick IntervalCoach
Pick IntervalCoach if you want the coach to read your recovery as well as your training. Every morning it reads over 60 signals (HRV, sleep and sleep debt, resting heart rate, breathing rate, skin temperature, training load, your own check-in) and adjusts today's session when the data calls for it, including easing a day that looks like an oncoming cold. It tells you why in plain language, and Coach+ can move a session or rebuild the week when you ask.
Under the daily calls sits a season plan: five periodization models steered by your goal event, with cycling, running, trail, swim and strength in one plan. If you train with Intervals.icu, IntervalCoach works inside it: it reads your history from there and writes structured workouts back, on to Garmin, Wahoo, Coros, Zwift or MyWhoosh. Race Recon turns your race course GPX or FIT into intervals matched to its climbs and a pacing and fuelling plan per segment. 25 languages, from €3 a month.
iOS depth, not just iOS presence
Xert's mobile app is built to run workouts on your smart trainer. IntervalCoach's app is built around your day: Apple Health is a first-class recovery source, with HRV, sleep, resting heart rate, VO₂ max, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and menstrual cycle data flowing into your daily readiness without any setup beyond the permission prompt. Siri shortcuts, home and lock screen widgets, Apple Watch complications and iPad support keep the next session one glance away, and the whole app is natively localised in 25 languages.

4.8from 270 ratings across the App Store and Google Play“I've been using IntervalCoach daily for more than six months. IC uses AI to provide adaptive training plans, detailed workouts, readiness, load management, etc. All of this is packaged in an attractive and intuitive UI. IC has helped me develop a long term plan (and stick to that plan!) for future A-races. […] This app provides the best combo of functionality, speed of development and affordability.”
“The App is made for athletes. Very good overview of all helpful details, when you start in a new training day (sleep, HRV, mood, etc. is analyzed and your training plan adapted if needed e.g. if HRV is low or you had a bad sleep). […] For me it is the best App on the market so far!”
“That's really impressive, tackling all of these things so quickly! Good luck finding that level of support from a big company like Google or Strava.”
“awesome app. work in progress, but the developer is incredibly fast at introducing new features and fixing bugs. there are a lot of options out there with AI trainers, but I'll be sticking to this one due to the amazing features and customer support.”
