IntervalCoach vs RestOrTrain: Honest Comparison

Both are AI coaches you can talk to. In RestOrTrain the chat is where everything happens, and the plan moves when you ask. IntervalCoach checks your recovery every morning and adjusts the day on its own, with Coach+ there when you want to talk it through.

Quick verdict

Pick RestOrTrain if you want to steer your training mostly through conversation and you'd rather connect Garmin, Wahoo or COROS directly than go through Intervals.icu. Pick IntervalCoach if you want a coach that reads your recovery and adjusts today's session without being asked, a season plan built on one of five periodization models, race course analysis, and €3 to €8 a month against $14.99.

Adaptation is more than 'easier or rest'

Your signals can reshape today's workout in many ways, adjusting the warm-up, capping intensity, swapping the workout type, or adding a breathing block to the cooldown. The coach picks what fits.

Adaptive Actions

Today's signals reshape today's workout.

  • +5 min warm-up
    sore legs
  • Intensity capped (Z5 → Z3)
    yellow recovery
  • Breathing block added
    HRV suppressed

When to pick RestOrTrain

RestOrTrain is built around one conversation. You ask whether to rest or train today, talk through yesterday's ride or tell it your week fell apart, and the revised plan and the structured workout come out of that same chat and go to your device. It connects directly to Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, COROS, Zwift and Rouvy, with Apple Health on iOS and Whoop for recovery, so you can start without an Intervals.icu account.

It's a good pick if you like to decide your training in dialogue, you want every change to happen only when you ask for it, and you prefer connecting your devices directly. The free tier lets you try the chat before you pay.

When to pick IntervalCoach

Pick IntervalCoach if you want the coach to make the first move. Every morning it reads over 60 signals (HRV, sleep and sleep debt, resting heart rate, breathing rate, skin temperature, training load, your own check-in) and adjusts today's session when the data calls for it, including easing a day that looks like an oncoming cold. The workout is on your calendar and your watch before you open the app. When you do want to talk, Coach+ explains the decision, moves a session or rebuilds the week from the same data.

Under the daily calls sits a season plan: five periodization models steered by your goal event, with cycling, running, trail, swim and strength in one plan. With Race Recon you can attach the race course as a GPX or FIT file and get intervals matched to its climbs, plus a pacing and fuelling plan per segment. Workouts go to your calendar through Intervals.icu and on to Garmin, Coros, Apple Watch, Polar or Zwift. 25 languages, and €3 to €8 a month against RestOrTrain's $14.99.

iOS depth, not just iOS presence

Both ship on iOS and Android. IntervalCoach goes deeper on what Apple already knows about you: Apple Health is a first-class recovery source, with HRV, sleep, resting heart rate, VO₂ max, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and menstrual cycle data flowing into your daily readiness without any setup beyond the permission prompt. Siri shortcuts, home and lock screen widgets, Apple Watch complications and iPad support keep the next session one glance away, and the whole app is natively localised in 25 languages.

“I've been using IntervalCoach daily for more than six months. IC uses AI to provide adaptive training plans, detailed workouts, readiness, load management, etc. All of this is packaged in an attractive and intuitive UI. IC has helped me develop a long term plan (and stick to that plan!) for future A-races. […] This app provides the best combo of functionality, speed of development and affordability.”

“The App is made for athletes. Very good overview of all helpful details, when you start in a new training day (sleep, HRV, mood, etc. is analyzed and your training plan adapted if needed e.g. if HRV is low or you had a bad sleep). […] For me it is the best App on the market so far!”

“awesome app. work in progress, but the developer is incredibly fast at introducing new features and fixing bugs. there are a lot of options out there with AI trainers, but I'll be sticking to this one due to the amazing features and customer support.”
