How AI coaching works for runners

An AI running coach reads your training history, your overnight recovery data and your calendar, decides whether today's planned run still fits how you have recovered, and changes the workout itself when it does not. The adjusted session reaches your watch like any other run.

Running needs its own handling within that. It asks more than cycling at the same training load, it is measured in more than one unit, and it has training methods of its own. Why running is judged differently

A run and a ride can carry the same training load number and feel very different. Running produces a higher perceived effort at the same load, and the difference shows in how quickly a runner stops absorbing more work.

IntervalCoach judges running fatigue on running's own scale. A runner is flagged as fatigued at a level of accumulated fatigue a cyclist would still train through, so a run is eased sooner than a ride would be. If you do both sports, fatigue from either one still counts toward tomorrow.

The daily checks work the same way as for any sport. When you are still inside the recovery window of a hard session, the next day is held below threshold, so a planned threshold run becomes tempo or endurance running. If your overnight signals say the plan is too much, the load comes down, the intensity is capped, the session is swapped, or the warm-up grows longer.

Pace, heart rate or power

Every structured run needs a target, and runners train against different ones.

Pace is the natural unit on flat roads and the default. Heart rate works when you have no reliable pace or power reference. Running power, from a Stryd pod or a Garmin watch, measures the work you are doing, which keeps an interval honest on a climb, into a headwind or on a treadmill without GPS.

Sessions pitched to your level

A threshold session only helps if it matches what you can currently hold. Norwegian and easy-interval methods

Many runners train with a specific method, and a coach should be able to follow it.

IntervalCoach offers three training methodologies: Norwegian Singles, Norwegian Doubles and the Easy Interval Method. The methodology sets the type of your quality sessions, such as sub-threshold intervals for the Norwegian approaches. Trail running

A mountain race asks for different pacing than a road race. IntervalCoach treats trail running as its own sport, so a trail race is planned as one and its pacing accounts for elevation.

Coming to running from another sport

Plenty of runners arrive from cycling. When running is your goal but not yet your habit, IntervalCoach builds it up gradually from the running you have actually been doing recently, with the rest of the week on the sport you already train.

Race day

Coming back from illness

A week lost to illness tempts a fast return. Hard sessions return step by step, the reduced load lasts longer after a longer illness, and it lifts early once your recovery signals are back to your own normal. The reasoning is in coming back from illness without blowing yourself up.

Limits that shape how it is used

Readiness informs the day and never overrules you. Overnight data is useful and noisy on any single morning, so a recovery estimate is one input among several and never overrides what you report about how you feel.

Targets depend on the reference behind them. Power targets need a running FTP in Intervals.icu, estimated from recent runs or entered yourself, so it is worth checking before switching your runs to power.

It can only read what your device records. Signals such as skin temperature and breathing rate sharpen the picture, and not every watch measures them.

It works with a coach as well as without one. A human coach can see the same dashboard as the athlete, edit the weekly plan and join the chat, and their instructions carry into the sessions the plan writes.
